When you should not use a dynamic QR code
A static QR code has the destination encoded in the pattern itself. It works forever, it depends on nobody staying in business, and it costs nothing. If you are printing a wifi password on a card, or a phone number on a van, a static code is the right answer and you should use one - including from a free tool that is not this one.
A dynamic QR code is worth it when one of two things is true: the destination might move, or you want to know how many people scanned it. Printing forty labels is precisely the case where both are usually true, because reprinting forty labels costs more than the subscription does.
Editable QR codes, after they are printed
The code itself never changes. It encodes a short link on our domain, and that link points wherever you tell it to today. Reprint nothing: edit the destination and the next scan goes to the new page. This is the whole reason dynamic codes exist, and it is worth exactly as much as the cost of reprinting your labels.
A QR code scan counter that other people can see
Every scan increments a count on the code it belongs to. Unlike every rival we looked at, that count does not live only in a dashboard you have to log into - each batch has a public link you can send to a client or put on a screen, and it updates live.
QR code analytics without a tag manager
There is nothing to install and no analytics property to configure. Scans are counted at the redirect, before the visitor reaches your page, so you get the number even when the destination is a PDF, a phone number or somebody else's site.

Dynamic QR codes: common questions

Dynamic codes can also be counted, because every scan passes through that link first.
Use a static code when the destination will genuinely never change and you do not care how often it is scanned - a wifi password, a phone number, a plain text label. Static codes work forever, depend on nobody, and cannot stop working because a company went away. Use a dynamic code when the thing you are pointing at might move, or when you want to know how many people scanned it. Most of this category will not tell you the first half of that answer, because dynamic is what they are selling.

Make it dynamic. The scan count appears next to the code and on the batch's public page. You do not need to install anything on the destination, which matters when the destination is a PDF or a site you do not control.
Ours do not expire and do not have a scan limit. Read that question carefully elsewhere in this category though: several tools cap free dynamic codes at a few hundred scans each, after which the code stops resolving - which, on a printed label, is indistinguishable from a broken product.
